Sarah has been making toys for 25 years. She was inspired to create Sarah's Silks while raising her 3 sons with imagination play during their Waldorf education. Drawing from the philosophies of Waldorf education and her own childhood of imaginative play, Sarah has been designing playsilks and other natural, eco-friendly wooden and silk toys for over 25 years including coloured playsilks which come in solid, enchanted, earth-tone and many other palettes.
The silk is Habotai an ancient product from China. Silk caterpillars eat mulberry leaves so farms have to grow lots of trees to produce silk. They also are fed by hand on family farms. No pesticides or chemicals can be used as the caterpillars and moths are sensitive. Sarah's Silk playsilks are hand-hemmed by women in their homes in one village near Suzjou and are paid an above average per piece rate.
Sarah visits the silk farms and the seamstresses yearly and feel good about supporting the silk industry as she feels it is a eco-friendly positive product from China.
